Welcome to Brainful Productions

For those of you that are new to our band of merry filmmakers, let me take a moment to tell you about ourselves. Way back in 2007 I participated in the Seattle 48 Hour Film Project for the first time. Though it was a small role on a friend’s team it was all I needed to convince me that this was something I must get more involved in. The next year my friend left for a life in New York and I decided to start a team of my own. Borrowing heavily from the remains of the previous year’s team and my own co-workers Hydrochloric Candy was born. We competed again in 2009, and here we are again getting ready for a 3rd run in 2010 though this time it will be different. Different how? Well, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves shall we? I mean, some of you may still be wondering what the 48 Hour Film Project is.

For those that have not had the joy of hearing me go on and on about the awesomeness of the 48 Hour Film Project, let me give you a quick overview. The concept is simple: gather a team and then over the course of 48 hours you must write, shoot, and edit a short film. How short is short? The minimum length is 4 minutes while the maximum allowed is 7. Simple, right? Well, in part because it keeps filmmakers honest and partly because it makes the competition more fun there is a catch. That catch is that on the Friday night of the competition you will draw a random genre. Your film must adhere to the characteristics of that genre, though it may also borrow from other genres so long as the primary genre is the one drawn. Still simple you say? Ok, how about this. In addition to a random genre, you are also given a character name/occupation, line of dialog, and prop which must all be incorporated in to the final product. How’s that for simple? But enough about the competition, you’re here to learn about our little crew. If you are interested in learning more about the competition you can do you by visiting the official 48 Hour Film Project website or the website for the Seattle competition.

I suppose now you’re wondering why we are called Brainful Productions this year when we had a perfectly good name in Hydrochloric Candy. There were many reasons to change the name and for that fact alone I thought it necessary. The biggest reason of all was to signify a fresh start. The last two years were a great learning experience, but that phase of the learning process is over. We will still be learning new things as we tinker with the formula, but I feel like the biggest and most important lessons have been covered. Another reason is that we have a change in leadership and I wanted to signify that properly. This year my partner in crime, Tim Kurkoski, is co-producing. Tim was pretty much my co-producer last year in every way but official title and this year we decided to make it official. Brainful Productions is even a reference to Tim’s response when I asked him what our new name should be. Having been quite busy that day he simply responded that he did not know and his brain was full. And Brainful Productions was born. Some of you may also know that the word “brainful” is defined on Urban Dictionary as “When you hear/read something so stupid that it physically pains your brain to understand it.” It’s a little cheeky, but it fits in a number of ways. Just ask anyone that was around for last year’s film.

There you have it. So what can you expect to see here in the future? Well, I expect there will be steady stream of updates as we prepare for our 48 hours of sheer insanity and we will do our best to even update you as the competition progresses. There will be introductions to key members of our team as well as an overview of what their duties entail. Last but not least there very well may be some begging on my part as making films is not cheap. I promise to keep the begging to a minimum, but as producer it is my job – more on that later this week.

Now I’d like to hear from you. Let me know in the comments if there is anything you would like to hear more about. Or just leave words of love and support. We love that kinda stuff around here.
